What does Proverbs 3:5-7 say?
Here’s a modern translation:
Don’t overthink or try to figure it out all on your own.
Surrender to divine guidance in all that you do
And your path will become straight (you will not stray from your intended path).
Simplest version of the message: “Quiet the chatter of your thinking mine, tune into your inner knowing, honor that guidance, and you will not be led astray from that which will create the life you are meant to live.”
Meditation and mindfulness practices are a method which help us to quiet the chatter. When we learn to quiet all the noise from our thinking minds and tune into our heart center, our heart-mind, our inner voice that is the spark of divine connection within us, we find that a shift occurs within ourselves. The way we feel about lives and even the way we live our lives shifts as well into a place of greater peace and joy. Those who have rediscovered this way of living will often speak of miracles or the amazing ways in which their lives have begun to unfold that previously seemed unimaginable. Those who have known me most of my life will testify that my intelligence and analytical skills have been a big part of what has defined me. Certainly I was never completely disconnected from my spiritual base or from what I consider to be one of my spiritual “superpowers” – kindness – and I lived more intuitively than many, but surrendering to my divine connection (to what I call the heart mind) especially when the guidance defied logic (or what I call the thinking mind – the brain) has been a central lesson I have been living in extreme example since 2014. Not all are meant to learn this lesson in the manner that my soul has chosen, but the universal truth of the lesson is there for all.
In 2012, when so many were discussing the significance of what some mistakenly labeled “the end of the Mayan calendar,” a new discourse emerged talking about the “shift” and/or the “awakening.” Looking back I can see that my Awakening began between 2006 and 2008, but that I became more aware of it in 2012 and by the end of 2013 was strongly tuning into that inner voice I now call divine guidance.
No matter what your religious background or beliefs, I believe that we have entered an age where all people are being called to remember what their infinite souls already know – that we are all one, connected through Divine Source (whether you call that God, Goddess, Creator, Great Spirit, Allah, Love or any number of terms). The age of separateness, where technology and material goods served to disconnect many from spirituality, where science and technology were juxtaposed with spirituality and religion as if those terms or beliefs were mutually exclusive, is coming to an end. The “Awakening” is a call to Humanity to restore the balance and uplift all on Earth by reintegrating spirituality with science/technology, individuality with connectedness and compassion.
In 2014, I listened as my inner voice told me that I needed to leave a successful career in state government service and somewhat secure life to follow my soul’s desire to be more in alignment with who I felt I was born to be. I had become aware that I was a medium and healer, and felt the urge to serve more fully in that capacity. The call of my soul guidance was loud and defying logic, I quit my job with little savings, shed most of my possessions and headed out towards a life I could not imagine and still at times have difficulties explaining to many. On that journey, I have thankfully learned that I am not alone and have met others who were called in a similar manner. At times we don’t know precisely where we are heading, how we will manage to meet our physical work obligations and needs of food, shelter and paying bills, or even where the journey will settle. The only thing which has sustained each of us on this type of journey is the knowing that when we’ve surrendered to the divine guidance we have always been provided for even if the means of meeting those needs has been unconventional.
I am not saying that all who are awakening or all who surrender as Proverbs 3:5-7 is recommending are meant to quit their jobs and pursue a life of complete surrender. Many of you are already in jobs or lives that are closely aligned with your soul purpose. In those cases, the lessons of this biblical passage will serve to enhance your lives by manifesting greater levels of inner peace and love – less stress, fear or anger in and around you. Each and every one of us is a blessing, with an important role in the world.
There are a few like me, actually many more than most would imagine, who have been called to serve in a sense as “disciples” of this new way – not evangelical missionaries telling others what to believe, but believers who teach and give courage through the way they live and the way their lives unfold. Some, like me, are called to be the storytellers that inform and hopefully inspire others to release the fear or preconceived notions which keep them imprisoned in a stressful or unfulfilling life and to step into their own awakening. For in telling our stories of “extreme surrender,” perhaps we inspire others to trust their inner voice and remember their divine connection.
